Van Dyk out to increase his Boston Marathon legacy

By Mark Etheridge

The legend that is Ernst van Dyk lines up in search of an incredible 11th Boston Marathon title in the United States on Monday afternoon (SA time).
Two years ago the six-time Paralympian made wheelchair racing history with a record-breaking 10th win. Monday sees him on the starting line for an incredible 17th time.
He shared his thoughts with Road to Rio 2016 ahead of what is expected to be an epic race.
‘I’m really looking forward to it. Conditions look way better than last year when we faced cold, rainy and gusty conditions.
‘It looks like there’ll be a bit of a cross wind but dry and warm weather.’
The 2016 running of the race takes on extra significance, not only because it’s an Olympic year.
‘The field is loaded as we kick off race one of the Abbot Wheelchair Marathon Majors series and everybody who is anybody in my sport is here, including London 2012 legend Dave Weir.
‘Given how the race unfolds there will be around seven guys with the potential to win this, including past champions Masazumi Soejima, Marcel Hug, Josh Cassidy, Hiroyuki Yamamoto and myself. And also, don’t write off Kurt Fearnley or Kota Hokinoue as well.
‘For me it will all have to happen in the first 5km if I’m to secure an 11th win in this historic race.’
The race, being run for the 120th time will be broadcast live on Supersport 7 from 3.15pm SA time.
