Oscar’s chances better

Oscar Pistorius’s chances of perhaps winning a medal at the IAAF World Championships later this month got that much better on Wednesday with the news that┬á two-time world and 2004 Olympic 400-metre champion Jeremy Wariner will miss the championships.

“Blade Runner” Pistorius recently qualified for the championships with a 45.07sec win in Lignano, Italy and there are some who say that all being well, he could even medal at the championships, writes Mark Etheridge.

Wariner, 27, has ligament damage to a toe of his left foot and is unable to push off properly. As such the American is unwilling to risk aggravating the injury ahead of next year’s London Olympics.

The injury also robs athletics fans of the chance of seeing Wariner take on fellow American and 2009 world champion LaShawn Merritt who is now back after serving a 21-month doping ban.

Pistorius, a multiple Paralympic medal winner, is still to be named in the final Team SA line-up for World Championships. A provisional side was announced earlier this month, before the 24-year-old had run his qualifying time.

Currently, Pistorius is the world’s 18th fastest athlete with that 45.07 while Wariner’s 44.88 warranted him the spot as 12th fastest in the world.
