Young Benson slips up at World Champs in Spain

By Mark Etheridge

Treacherous weather accounted for South Africa’s African Youth Games time trial champion Michelle Benson at the UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain on Monday.
The young Hoërskool Waterkloof pupil was in action in the junior women’s individual time trial.
The TT was raced over 13.9 kilometres and won by Australia Macey Stewart in 20min 08.39sec. The depth of Aussie cycling was underlined by the fact that Anna-Leeza Hull was also on the podium for bronze and fellow Aussie Alexandra Manly took fourth. Stewart’s victory margin was 10.79sec.
Benson took a tumble on the slippery surface in persistent rain and trailed home 48th spot, 3:25.69 adrift.
Just ahead of her was South Africa’s other rider, Monique Gerber in 44th spot (+2:24.80).
‘It wasn’t the best of days but oh well…,’ Benson told Road to Rio 2016 shortly after her race.
‘I crashed on the steep downhill section, not even in a tight corner, I just wiped out in the rain. I only had about 3km to race!
‘My back and head is quite sore but otherwise I’m OK and I’ll definitely still race the road race,’ concluded the Pretoria rider, who is also currently busy with her matric year of schooling.
