Top-ranked Kevin Anderson went into the quarter-finals of the China Open without any undue complications on Thursday, despite going to two tiebreakers to progress.
Currently celebrating his highest ATP Tour ranking of 31, Anderson beat 55th ranked Albert Montantes 7-6 7-6 to advance. He won the two tiebreaks 7-3 and 7-4 respectively against the Spanish ace.
His next assignment is a match-up with Marin Cilic┬á after the Croat ÔÇô ranked 25th in the world, beat Italain Fabio Fognini in three sets, 6-2 6-7 (1) 6-3.
The towering Anderson used his big service game to good advantage, firing down 13 aces to Montanes’ three and the Spaniard’s cause wasn’t helped by the fact that he was double-faulted on no less than 10 occasions (to Anderson’s five).
Anderson also had a better first service percentage (64% to 52%) in the match that went on for nine minutes over the two hour mark on the Lotus Court.
