Bloemfontein’s Johan Cronje, one of our 1,500 metre qualifiers for the World Championships in Germany next month, ran another fast race when finishing seventh at the second edition of the prestigious international meeting in Tangier, Morocco on Sunday.
His time was 3 min 36.74 sec, behind American Olympic star, Bernard Lagat who won in 3min 32.56 sec.
Two Moroccans, Yassine Bensghir (3:33.69) and Abelaati Iquider (3:34.11) followed Lagat over the finish line. The highly successful meeting organised by Hicham el Guerrouj, double OIympic gold medal winner in 2004, was a major success and attracted athletes from more than 34 countries.
Ofentse Mogawane, who is still hoping to achieve the entry mark of 45.55 sec for Berlin, ran third in the 400m in 46.81 sec. His best times so far in Europe during the last fortnight were 45.77, 45.81 and 45.90 sec.
