Banyana go down to Sweden in final minute

It was heartbreak for Banyana Banyana on Sunday after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sweden in their World Cup opener in Wellington, with a 90th-minute goal their undoing.

Despite taking a surprising 1-0 lead in the 48th minute thanks to Hilda Magaia’s goal, their hopes of a fairytale victory were dashed by Sweden’s Fridolina Rolfo, who scored in the 65th minute, and Amanda Ilestedt, whose 90th-minute winner sealed their fate.

Still on the hunt for their first-ever World Cup point, looming fixtures against Argentina and Italy will not make their task any easier in Group G.

Banyana Banyana bravely withstood a barrage of Swedish attacks in the relentless rain, knowing that this match would be a challenging test for the African champions, given their 54th position on the FIFA rankings, while Sweden ranks third.
