Basetsana’s World Cup dream: Next stop, Namibia

basetsana

The Basetsana national U20 women’s team are back in camp this week to prepare for their FIFA 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup qualifier return leg against Namibia on Sunday.

The side had a break after thrashing Namibia 5-0 in Dobsonville, Soweto, on 17 September.

Next year’s World Cup in France (5-24 Aug) will be Basetsana’s maiden U20 World Cup, should they qualify.

Carrying that comfortable five-goal cushion heading to Namibia, Basetsana have resumed their preparations at the Nike Training Centre in Soweto for the return leg at the Sam Nojuma Stadium in Windhoek.

Basetsana have been lethal in front of goal while keeping things neat and tidy in their last two matches. Their 5-0 win over Namibia was preceded by the same victory margin over the senior Swaziland women’s national team in their own backyard.

Head coach Maud Khumalo has only made one change to the squad of 22 which played against Namibia, bringing in goalkeeper Robyn Coetsee from the HPC in the place of Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Loretta Mokoena.

Basetsana travel to Windhoek on Friday.

The Basetsana squad:
Goalkeepers: Mapaseka Mpuru, Jessica Williams, Robyn Coetsee, Batty Mallela
Defenders: Antonia Maponya, Lindokuhle Gladile, Bongeka Gamede, Katelgo Mabuza, Tyla-Bree Joss, Snegugu Zondi
Midfielders: Noxolo Cesana, Sinoxolo Cesana, Lelona Daweti, Nosipho Mahlalwe, Lethlogongolo Mashigo, LInda Motlhalo (captain), Madembe Tshikumu, Gabriela Salgado
Forwards: Zimasa Dekeda, Ntombifikile Ndlovu, Kirsten Nolan, Refilwe Maseko
Coach: Maud Khumalo
