SA chalk up Cup whitewash

An in-form Rik De Voest and Jeff Coetzee propelled South Africa to a straight-forward victory over Macedonia’s Pedrag Rusevki and Lazar Magdincev ┬áto set up a meeting, on home soil, against Belarus in the second round of Group Africa/Europe. They eventually won the tie on Sunday 5-0.

The South Africans needed just 1hr 28min on the Emperor’s Palace courts in Johannesburg to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. It rendered Sunday’s reverse singles matches of academic value only, and De Voest, the local No1, will jet to the USA a day early to prepare for the ATP tournament in Indian Wells. Raven Klaasen took his place ┬áin the reverse singles.

In that reverse singles, Klaasen beat Illija Martinoski 6-2 6-2 and Van der Merwe out-served and out-smarted Dimitar Grabuloski in a comprehensive 6-4 6-0 annihilation that lasted only 45 minutes.

On Saturday De Voest and Coetzee breezed through their encounter in less than 90 minutes, for a 6-1 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 success. The game ended when a powerful Coetzee service return was tamely deposited into the net.
