Gauteng’s Peter van der Westhuizen became South Africa’s 14th fastest miler of all time when he ran 3min 56.26sec at the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic Grand Prix in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday.
Van der Westhuizen, 24, finished 11th in a race that saw two Kenyan runners go sub 3 min 49 sec. Asbel Kiprop, fourth in the Olympic 1,500m final last year, won in 3:48.50 with countryman Haron Keitany a close second in 3:48.78.
Van der Westhuizen improved his personal best by more than three seconds and is now South Africa’s fastest miler of the year.
Juan van Deventer, who ran a brilliant 1500m a week ago and set a personal best mile time of 3 min 51.31 sec a year ago in Oslo, withdrew from Sunday’s race because of a slight injury.
Sydney Maree (3:48.83) and Johan Fourie (3:50.82) still head the SA all time miler’s list.
