Moodie doubles up

South African interest at the All-England tennis championships at Wimbledon continues on three fronts as the tournament entered its final week on Monday.

All the action is in the doubles category. The seventh-ranked combination of Wesley Moodie and his Belgian partner Dick Norman come up against the Czech/Slovakian pairing of Martin Damm and Filip Polasek in the third round.

Moodie’s a busy man as he is also scheduled to play a third round mixed doubles match. This after he and American team-mate Lisa Raymond beat Eric Butorac (US) and Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3 7-6 (3).

Seeded 11th they now come up against the seventh ranked duo of Max Mirnyi and Alisa Kleybanova.

In the women’s doubles Chanelle Scheepers is going some way to making up for the disappointment of losing in the first round of the singles category.

She and Serbian team-mate Jelena Jankovic are now into the third round. In the first round they Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues and Ipek Senoglu of Turkey 6-4 6-2.

Then in the second round the unseeded combination beat 13th seeded Russians Vera Dushevina and Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets 7-6 6-4.

They now face a tough task in the form of the fourth seeds Gisela Dulko of Argentina and Flavia Pennetta of Italy.
