Chani Scheepers’ run of success was stopped by Samantha Stosur at the the HP Japan Women’s Open in Osaka on Saturday, writes Mark Etheridge.
Scheepers started the week celebrating her highest WTA Tour ranking of 37 but was unable to overcome the top-ranked Australian.
Stosur won this quarter-final in straight sets 6-2 6-3 in a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes.
The Aussie was on top in all facets of the game, with six aces to one and three double faults to the five of Scheepers.
First service percentages saw Stosur at 74% and Scheepers at 51% and first service points won was 77% for Stosur and 57% for Scheepers.
Currently ranked sixth in the world, Stosur now goes on to play either fourth-seed Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic or China’s unseeded Jie Zheng in the semi-finals.
