Dlomo fifth in Japan

South Africa’s Norman Dlomo placed fifth in the 11th Nagano Olympic Marathon in Japan on Sunday.

Dlomo was part of the leading bunch through halfway (66min 04sec) but fell off the pace as Kenya’s Isaac Macharia upped the tempo and went on to win in 2hr 11min 21sec.

Dlomo, who turned 34 on Friday, was clocked at 2:15:41. Earlier this month he finished runner-up to fellow South African Olympian Hendrick Ramaala at the Nedbank Matha half-marathon in Middelburg.

The women’s categorgy in Nagano was won by Russia’s Irina Timofeyeva in 2:30:08 from Kenya’s Irene Limika (2:30:50).

Ethiopia’s 1992 Olympic 10,000m gold medallist, Derartu Tulu, finished fourth in 2:34:17.
