Sprinters Hannes Dreyer and Simon Magakwe were the first South Africans to progress through the heats on Wednesday’s first day of the 17th African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
Dreyer was 10th fastest qualifier, clocking 10.55sec for the 100-metre dash, after coming fourth in his heat and going through on time after Gambia’s Suwaibu Sanneh won in 10.43sec.
Magakwe was 18th quickest in the morning heats, clocking 10.66sec.
Magakwe went through automatically, despite running a relatively slow time, in finishing second to Kenya’s Kipkemoi Soy (10.64).
Nigeria’s Obinna Metu was fastest qualifier with a 10.37 run in the heats.
