Our men’s table tennis team played their way into fourth spot at the African Senior Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon earlier this month.
Finishing ahead of SA in the 11-team men’s category were the traditional powerhouses of African table tennis, Egypt, Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville.
Seeded second in the men’s singles open event, Shane Overmeyer made light work of the opposition to attain quarter-finals status before his way was blocked by one of the top Egyptian players. the doubles pairing of Overmeyer and Luke Abrahams reached the semi-final stages before succumbing to the Egyptian combination that went on to win the event.
The surprise of the tournament was from junior Cody Meyer who beat players ranked higher than himself.
Our women’s team didn’t make as much of an impact but newcomer to international play, Athi Mda, showed enviable determination and focus in her matches.
Sameera Maal reached the quarter-finals in the women’s singles category but went down to the eventual winner from Egypt.
The other women’s member was Stephany Martin and the team was led by Audrey MadDonald, head of delegation and accompanied by Blue Badge umpire Moegamad Isaacs.
