Hannah Garton added one more medal to Team SA’s tally after winning bronze in the Jumping International Team event at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.
Garton was one of the African continent riders who took part in the competition against mixed South American, North American, European, Australian and Asian teams. Team Africa was represented by riders from Zambia, South Africa, Mauritius, Egypt and Zimbabwe.
Commenting on her performance, Garton said, ‘At the beginning, I was a little bit nervous and not sure if I would be able to ride the course but I contained composure. I only learned to ride this horse in the past few days. Our team had potential, so I expected that we would be on the podium.
‘I’m looking forward to our individual competition on Friday and Saturday and I am very excited to see how that will go,’ she added.
Team SA Equestrian coach and team manager, Chad Cunningham, also shared on his satisfaction on Garton’s performance.
‘I was thrilled with Hannah and her team’s performance, they did very well and had good team spirit. They pulled through together as a team and everyone was behind each other.
‘The individual races will be more technical and we are expecting it to be a little more difficult, but I believe Hannah will do great because she improves with each day on the horse and is getting to know him a little bit better.
‘She is on her second horse now because the first one she was riding had to be changed. Although her horse is a bit difficult, I’m hopeful that she will do well,’ Cunningham concluded.
