Our World Cup gold medal canoeist Bridgitte Hartley gets back home to South Africa on Wednesday.
But she won’t be in town for long before her international canoe campaign continues in earnest.
Hartley won gold in the showcase K1 500-metre final at the final World Cup event of the season, in Szeged, Hungary on Sunday.
“It’s such a super special feeling, I am really overjoyed,” Hartley told Road to London. “I get back on Wednesday morning then fly home to Richards Bay at midday but plan to be back in Pretoria on Thursday because I have to write an exam at university.”
There’s certainly not much “down-time” in the life of an international canoeist because in the last week of June she races in Plettenberg Bay for the SA marathon selection event for the marathon world championships.
“Then I will be flying back to Hungary on 30th June. ┬áI will train in Hungary for about five weeks and then leave for Canada on 1st of August because the world sprint champs are from 12-16 August in Halifax, Canada.”
