Grandin into quarters

South African tennis player Natalie Grandin and her Czech Republic partner Vladimira Uhlirova are through to the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles competition at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The unseeded duo beat seventh seeds Julia Goerges and Lisa Raymond in the third round, going through in three sets against the German/US combination.

The final score of a match that lasted just over two hours was 7-6 (5) 3-6 6-4. It was an evenly matched encounter with Grandin, 29, and Uhlirova recording a first service percentage of 60% compared to their opponents’ 66%.

They lost the aces tally 2-3 and the double-fault count was three apiece. For their efforts East London-born Grandin and Uhlirova will now come up against the tournament’s top seeds, Gisela Dulko of Argentina and Italian Flavia Pennetta.

Later on Wednesday the Margaret Court Arena was due to see a clash between some former great players in the Legends Doubles.

South Africa’s most famous player Wayne Ferreira and Russian partner Yevgeny Kafeinikov will take on the mighty power of Frenchman Henri Leconte and “home boy” Patrick Rafter. It promises to be a great match!
