It’s the Erhard and Andrea show

Erhard Wolfaardt and Andrea Steyn won the season ending BSG/Energade Sprint Triathlon in Blouberg on Sunday and clinched the overall series.

Wolfaardt had only been beaten once, in the first race, in the series and had missed the Port Elizabeth leg on 28 November due to commitments to the ATU Africa Cup. Steyn on the other hand had swept all before her after missing the first leg of the series and also missing the PE leg due to competing at the Africa Cup.

After a fifth place finish at the ATU Pretoria-Tshwane Africa Cup in Pretoria on Sunday 28 November, Wolfaardt was hungry for victory.
Wolfaardt was part of a nine-man group to emerge out of the cold Atlantic Ocean after a 600-metre swim. All the contenders were in that group after Daniel Halksworth had finished the swim about 18 seconds ahead of the main pack.

The big break came once again on the run, as Wolfaardt powered away from the group, although he was given a scare by home-boy Richard Murray who was chasing him down.

Murray screamed through final half of the 5km run in seven minutes but Wolfaardt was able to hold off the young Capetonian for his fifth win in the seven-leg series and thereby claiming overall honours.

Carlyn Fischer had a superb swim in the sea, clocking 8:01 for the 600m swim. Steyn coming into T1 a minute later had some hard work ahead of her, but her class on the bike and run once again proved to be the decider. Fischer, after being caught on the bike, had one of her better runs to hold onto the second rung on the podium ahead of Carla Van Huysteen.

The win was Steyn’s fifth out of five races. The 26-year-old missed the first race in the series and also the sixth when she raced at the ATU Pretoria-Tshwane Africa Cup in Pretoria late last month, which she also won.
