A team of 14 athletes returned victorious from the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho, USA, after winning a gold medal in the Floor Hockey team event, beating Ecuador 2-0 in the final. Volunteer head coach Thinandazhe Samuel Maduwa is proud of the team he trained in school classrooms in Limpopo. ‘Many of the athletes have experience in soccer and athletics, but we only started training in floor hockey last year, meeting on Saturdays in school classrooms. But they are passionate about sport and I think that is what helped us win,’ says the 42 year old teacher. The success of the floor hockey team is another great accolade for SOSA, the country’s national association that facilitates training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
