Rene sizzles in Stuttgart

Our athletes are right on track on the indoor athletics circuit.

Hard on the heels of Juan van de Venter’s new national┬á indoor 1,500 metre record of 3min 37.25sec in Germany last week, Rene Kalmer made her own mark.

On this occasion it was Kalmer, running only the second indoor race of the year, over 3,000m in Stuttgart at the weekend.

She set a new national mark of 9min 2.92sec where she placed fifth behind Ethiopia’s Meseret Dufar (8:24.46).

Kalmer’s time was a personal best by almost 10 sec and an improvement of 4.92 sec on the national indoor best of 9 min 07.87 sec set by Michelle Dekkers in 1990 in Indianapolis 20 years ago.

Kalmer’s previous best of 9:12.92 was achieved in Karlsruhe a week ago.

The IAAF World Indoor Championship meeting takes place in Doha, Qatar between 12-14 March.
