Khotso ready to jump

Our only medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, athlete Khotso Mokoena is about to start his 2011 season.

Mokoena won a silver medal in the long jump event in Beijing but had an up-down season in 2010 with niggling injuries despite winning his event at the African Championships in Kenya, writes Mark Etheridge.

The 25-year-old Gauteng athlete will be only too aware that this is an important year for track and field with the world championships coming up in Daegu, Korea in August/September and then the Olympics in London next year. Mokoena’s name was not among those announced in SASCOC’s latest 2011 OPEX programme athletes and he’ll no doubt soon be coming up with a few performances to change that.

Mokoena plans on jumping three of the IAAF indoor circuit meetings. “I’m leaving South Africa on Tuesday (Feb 2) for the indoor circuit. I’m jumping in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday and then in Stockholm, Sweden on the 18th and lastly the 22nd in Birmingham, England.”

His best indoor effort in the 2010 season was an 8.08 metre effort jumped at the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar where he also won the silver medal.
