Khwela takes next step

With her eyes now firmly set on the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jennifer Khwela will compete at a milestone competition, the Bumbo Gymnastics Cup from 2-4 December  in Tshwane.

Jennifer’s road to London will now be boosted by this opportunity to compete with some of the best on home turf.

The Bumbo Gymnastics Cup is an international Gymnastics event that features Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics. The event which has previously been called the SA Cup is used to expose local talent to world class gymnastics on home soil, by attracting international gymnasts to the event.

The event effectively falls in line with the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) vision to develop gymnastics from its grassroots transformation programmes and develop talented athletes to compete on the world stage. This is already paying dividends through the Federations talent identification programmes from which Jennifer  is a product.

The event boasts a star studded line-up from the world of gymnastics that includes Jessica Hogg (WAL) who represented Great Britain at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and Katelyn Ohashi who was second All Around at USA Junior National Championships. Men’s Artistic Gymnastics World Champion on Floor and Vault, Marian Dragulescu (ROM), Luke Folwell (ENG) who won five medals at 2010 Commonwealth Games will also feature at the event.

In addition to the competition they face, Jennifer and other members that will form the South African team will also get an opportunity to rub shoulders with the likes of Bela Karolyi, the Romanian Gymnastics coach to Nadia Commaneci (first gymnast to get a score of perfect 10). Bela has coached nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, sixteen European medallists and six US national champions. The event will also see the likes of Valeri Liukin, who is father and coach to Women’s Artistic world champion Nastia Liukin (USA).

The event which is sponsored by Bumbo, manufacturers of baby products, will be hosted at the Joni Bach Spontscentrum in Pretoria North as well as the SAGF National Academy of Gymnastics which is housed at the Matsport Centre in Centurion, Tshwane.

The Bumbo Gymnastics Cup takes place at the Joni Bach Centre in Pretoria North on 2 December 2010 and Matsport Centre from 3 ÔÇô 4 December 2010. Entrance is free to the public.
