Knox, Rabie ride off with honours

Max Knox and Mari Rabie obliterated the field at the Nelson’s Creek Mountain Bike Challenge in Paarl at the weekend.

Knox completed the challenging three-day stage race in an impressive combined time of 7hr 47min 54sec, securing himself the championship title in the men’s category of the event.┬á Knox said the event was awesome.

ÔÇ£Today’s route was amazing.┬á Brandon Stewart and I worked together from the beginning, working the guys over and then breaking way. The route was fast for the first 30km, followed by 10km of uphill climbing and a fast downhill,” enthused Knox.

“The last 13km was flat and resulted in fast riding.┬á As a whole the event was really well organized, with routes that were superbly marked.┬á I like the idea of a three-day stage race as it’s perfect for all kind of riders.┬á I definitely would like to come back next year,ÔÇØ says Knox.

Jacques Rossouw was second overall with Stewart third.
Mari Rabie won the women’s category in a combined time of 9hr 26min 59sec.┬á Rabie says she’ll definitely be back to defend her title next year if she’s not racing abroad at the time.┬á ÔÇ£I had a very nice race, the climbs suited me perfectly.┬á It was at the first climb that I managed to break away from Elmien Stander.

“The route was perfect with lots of jeep track, nice climbs and rocky non-technical sections.┬á I come from an endurance background so the Nelson’s Creek Mountain Bike Challenge was perfect for me,ÔÇØ she said.┬á Stander was second and Kasha Dickie third.
The 2009 Nelson’s Creek Mountain Bike Festival catered for the entire family.┬á On Saturday and Sunday beginners and novices tackled the shorter loops of 18km and 15 km on fairly flat terrain, while intermediate riders enjoyed the fast 32km and 30km routes through the rolling countryside.

More experienced bikers took on the 54 and 61km trails, which contained a couple of challenging surprises. JP van Zyl from Recycles kept competitors’ bikes in top condition all weekend long with his much-needed and appreciated bike washing and maintenance services.

Fun wine tastings, fabulous farm stalls and beautiful scenery ensured that the weekend was filled with entertainment for all.┬á In the evenings competitors and spectators enjoyed a slide show of the day’s action, movies, kids’ entertainment and more.
