KZN Coastals crowned champions

A stunning performance saw KZN Coastals put in a stunning performance to beat favourites Southern Gauteng in the final of the men’s Inter-provincial hockey tournament in Pietermaritzburg at the weekend.

Southern Gauteng came out firing in the first half and were rewarded as early as the seventh minute when a fast counter attack by Lloyd Norris-Jones saw him play a brilliant cross field pass to fellow national striker Thornton Macdade who smashed a powerful reverse stick past Raiders keeper Gown Jones.

Raiders fought back hard and created chances to draw level but were unable to use their opportunities and went into the half time break 1 ÔÇô 0 down.

The second half saw the KZN Raiders come out with real purpose and energy. They got back into the game when Wade Paton smashed the ball past the Southerns keeper after he was left unmarked at the top of the circle.

Coastals second goal came just four minutes later when a brilliant cross field ball by Lloyd Madsen found overlapping left half Bruce Grant unmarked and he smashed the ball home in what was to be the eventual match winner.

Southern Gauteng threw everything at Coastals to try get back in the game but where denied by some brilliant keeping from the young Gowan Jones.
KZN Raiders were deserving winners of a great final.

The third/fourth place play-off saw Western Province destroy Northern Gauteng 6-1. ÔÇ¿Fifth/sixth play-off action ended with KZN Inland getting the better of Eastern Province 3- 2 and the seventh/eighth spot play-off had Peninsula beating North West in sudden death strokes after drawing 2-2 during regulation time.
