Tanith second in China

Tanith Maxwell, currently one of our leading women’s marathoners, placed second in the Xiamen half-marathon in China at the weekend.

Maxwell makes her London Marathon debut in April and was hoping that the expected cooler conditions in China would help her set a quick time in China.

But, reports Sapa, the half-marathon started after the standard marathon resulting in her having to make her way through the 35,000-strong field.

“The first kilometre took almost 10 minutes and felt like an eternity,” she said. My first 11 kilometres took just under 47 minutes because of the backlog. But I’m very satisfied with my 34min 20sec time for the last 10km she said.

Maxwell, who represented South Africa at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, has said that her main goal is to represent her country in the marathon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
