Medals for Schoeman, Versfeld

By Mark Etheridge

South African Olympic swimmers Roland Schoeman and Neil Versfeld were among the medals at the recent Paris Open meeting in France.

Schoeman won the 50-metre butterly in 23.61sec, touching ahead of Venezuelan Albert Subirats (23.81) and France’s Frederick Bousquet (23.83).

For his turn, Versfeld doubled up in the breaststroke events. “It went really well. I got second in the 200m (2min 13.75sec) and seventh in the 100m,” said Versfeld.

Versfeld was less than a second behind Luxembourg’s Laurent Carnol (2:12.90). Both upset the local favourite Hugues Dubosq who ended fourth in 2:14.21.

Based in Georgia, United States, Versfeld will be a busy man in the next few weeks. “I’m in Slovenia right now with the rest of the SA team doing a training camp.

“Then I head back to the US on Saturday to carry on with my training for a couple of weeks before heading home to swim the SA short-course in Pietermaritzburg in August.”
