Moodie into second round

It was a case of even stevens for South African tennis at Wimbledon on Thursday with a victory cancelled out by a defeat.

Both matches were first round doubles affairs with Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman going through to the second round and Natalie Grandin and Abigail Spears exiting the London tournament.

Moodie and Belgian partner Dick Norman accounted for another SA/Belgian combination in Jeff Coetzee and Kristof Vliegen. The seventh seeds came up tops in a four-set match, 7-6 (3) 6-4-6 6-2.

But it wasn’t to be for South Africa’s Grandin and her United States partner Spears. They went down in straight sets 6-3 6-3 to the Italian combination of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci .

Moodie and Norman will now come up against the unseeded pair of Andrey Golubev (Kazakhstan) and Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round.
