Moodie into quarter-finals

Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman moved into the quarter-finals of the Pilot Pen Open tennis tournament in New Haven, Connecticut on Wednesday.

The South African/Belgian combination are busy preparing for the US Open which starts in Flushing Meadows, New York next week.

On Wednesday they accounted for the United States wildcard combination of Nolan Paige and Marc Powers.

They won in straight sets, 6-4 6-2 and now come up against the Swedish/Romanian pair of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, who put out third seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach in a three-set encounter. Moodie, currently ranked 23rd on the world doubles rankings and Norman (20th) beat Lindstedt and Tecau in the round of 32 at last week’s Cincinnati Masters.

Tournament top seeds Daniel Nestor (Can) and Nenad Zimonjic (Ser) also went through to the quarters, beating US wildcards Eric Butorac and Travis Parrott in straight sets.

Moodie will also be involved in Davis Cup action next month when South Africa take on Germany in a crucial clay-court encounter in Stuttgart.
