Moodie makes quarters

Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman are into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after a gutsy four-hour  battle.

South African Moodie and his big Belgian partner Norman beat the Romanian combination of Andrei Pavel and Horia Tecau 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 14-12.

Clearly the Romanians ran out of steam as they had another four-hour struggle to get past Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsy in the second round, including a 99-minute fifth set..

The match ended with a nail-biting 91-minute deciding set. At 12-12, the Romanian pair must have been confident of repeating their second round success. But as the match entered its fifth hour, they crumbled, Moodie and Norman coming out on top to secure a place in the quarter-finals after four hours and one minute of play.

Meanwhile, last year’s mens’ doubles winners and second seeds this year, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, rocketed into the semi-finals after a textbook 6-2 6-3 6-4 straight sets win over Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach.

Top-seeded American twins Bob and Mike Bryan also made their way into the semi-finals after beating Bruno Soares and Zimbabwe’s Kevin Ullyett 6-2 6-1 6-4 in a match lasting only 80 minutes. Time will tell if the Bryan brothers will meet last year’s winners in the final.
