More glory for Khwela

Jennifer Khwela has done it again! South Africa’s star gymnast at this year’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi has picked up another silver medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Croatia.

Jennifer qualified for the vault final in third place with a score of 13.200. She is currently ranked sixth in the FIG Women’s Artistic Gymnastics world vault rankings and fought back in the final to claim the silver medal with a final average score of 13.350 points.

She tied with Tkal─ìec Tijana (currently ranked first in the 2010 FIG Women’s Artistic Gymnastics world vault rankings) and Polish gymnast Janik Gabriela. Paula Plichta from Poland picked up the gold with 13.425 points.

This is Jennifer’s fourth medal haul from a major international gymnastics competition this year alone. Her 2010 tour de force saw her winning golds and silvers at this year’s African Gymnastics Championships, the FIG World Cup in Doha, Qatar and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.

The South African Gymnastics Federation is especially proud as Jennifer was the only black female athlete to win an individual medal at the games (able-bodied).

With her eyes firmly set on a podium finish at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she will compete at another FIG World Cup in Germany before returning to South Africa to take on international competitors on home soil at the Bumbo Gymnastics Cup in Tshwane from 2-4 December 2010.

The Bumbo Gymnastics Cup takes place at the Joni Bach Centre in Pretoria North on 2 December 2010 (for rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics) and Matsport Centre from 3-4 December 2010 (for men and women’s artistic gymnastics). Entrance is free to the public.
