Youngsters go down

Our junior hockey side were once again on the receiving end on day seven of the BDO Junior Women’s World Cup in Boston, United States.

In the first Pool F match of the day they came up against the Netherlands and went down 7-0, their biggest defeat of the tournament thus far.

The Netherlands controlled play but at first had trouble getting past South Africa’s defence and into their attacking circle. Finally in the 15th minute the Netherlands broke through and scored a field goal by Elsemiek Groen to take the 1-0 lead.

Netherlands Kelly Jonker had a field goal disallowed in the 28th minute, but quickly got the ball back and sent a flick into the right side of the cage to put the Netherlands up 2-0 in the 29th minute. The teams went into halftime 2-0 up.

After failing to convert a couple of penalty corners early in the second half, Jonker scored her second field goal of the match in the 41st minute to increase the score to 3-0 and the barrage continued in the 48th minute through a penalty corner effort by Caia van Maasakker; and then in the 51st minute through a Willemijn Willemse field goal.

The Netherlands maintained their attack and got on the board again with a field goal by Emilie Mol in the 64th minute. A minute later Jonker completed her hat-trick to make the score 7-0 against South Africa.

The Netherlands had another opportunity to increase their lead in the 68th minute off a penalty corner, but the drag flick shot was saved by the keeper, sparing further damage.
