Recently-crowned world junior girls BMX champion Teagan O’Keeffe ended fourth in the BMX final at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore on Thursday.
The 17-year-old KwaZulu-Natal schoolgirl clocked 36.982sec for the final, finishing 1.284sec behind winner Mayara Perez of Brazil.
Second and third places went to Australia’s Kirsten Dellar and Maartje Hereijgers of the Netherlands.
No individual medals are awarded in the cycling events, the results all going towards the team prize of all combined events.
In her three semi-finals rides earlier in the day, O’Keeffe, had returns of second, third and first, her fastest being a 38.019.
O’Keeffe’s male counterpart, Lunga Mkhize didn’t fare as well in the boys’ BMX preliminaries, his ride of 35.189 seeing him place 20th of the 32 riders.
In the other final contested on Thursday, Murray McDougall swam to seventh spot in the youth 50-metre butterfly event. He clocked 25.22sec in a race won by Andrei Gorovov, the Ukraine athlete touching in 23.64sec.
In a girl’s preliminary hockey match, our girls went down 3-1 to Korea, coming back from a 3-0 halftime deficit. This is a definite improvement on their early matches where they lost to Argentina and the Netherlands.
In earlier action on Thursday, Frans Schutte heaved his way into the boys’ shot put final. A personal best throw of 20.24 metres saw the South African end as fourth best competitor in the heats.
On the athletics track South Africans also progressed to four B-finals and a C-Final.
Stiaan Minnie ended 13th in the hammer heats with a throw of 62.31 to make the B-final. Others into B-finals are: Migael Celliers (13th in the heats with a 4.45m effort), Schalk Burger (third in his 400m hurdles heat, 53.22) and Thato Makhafola (sixth in her 1000m heat, 2:52.92). In the C-Final is sprinter Siphelo Ngqabaza who ended second in his heat with a run of 22.75.
In other sports the boys’ basketball team went down 12-26 to the Philippines and Wian Sullwald was part of a mixed Africa/Europe relay team that ended ninth in the triathlon competition.
In the pool, the girls 4x100m freestyle relay team ended ninth in their heats (4:02.29) and failed to make the final.
