Oscar’s best not enough

South African “Blade-Runner” Oscar Pistorius ran his best 400 metre time of┬á the year in Lucerne, Switzerland on Wednesday night.

But vitally, our Paralympic hero’s 47.07 second second-place finish was still not enough for him to qualify for the able-bodied IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany next month.

It was Pistorius’ third race on the European circuit and he was runner-up to Japan’s Keitarou Satou (46.56).

Prior to last night, Pistorius ran in Milan and Oslo, and returned times of 47.24 and 47.18sec respectively.

Pistorius, a double-amputee sprinter, needs to run a time of 45.95sec to qualify for Berlin, but he has not run within a second of that mark this season.

He has struggled to approach the world qualifying standard after being injured in a boating accident near Johannesburg in February.

Velletri, Italy on Saturday now represents Pistorious’ last chance of boarding the Boeing to Berlin’s World championships.
