Paralympian Fuchs flies to another national TT win

By Mark Etheridge

Cape Town’s 2016 Rio Olympian, Goldy Fuchs raced to his second national road time trial on the trot as the national championships rolled into action in Oudtshoorn on Tuesday.

Twenty-six-year-old Fuchs was racing in the T2 classification and tackled a 14.6-kilometre course.

Said a satisfied Fuchs: ‘The weather was a bit overcast and humid for my event. I set off at 8.31am and managed to pace myself perfectly over the duration of the course which was almost flat with a slight drag.’

He clocked 26min 28.353sec to beat London 2012 Paralympian Gerhard Viljoen into runners-up spot (26:59.827).

‘I’ve had good preparation leading up to the National Champs with my biokineticist, Riaan Karr, who assisted me with my training at Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) last year and leading up to Nationals.

‘The finish line was on a nice fast downhill section and in the end I did enough to beat my opponent to take the win for the second year in a row in my classification.’

Next up is the T2 road race which will be contested on Thursday morning.
