The Western Cape Sports Association for the Physically Disabled held their provincial trials at Stellenbosch’s Coetzenburg Stadium at the weekend, which incorporated para athletics and para cycling.
Team SA Paralympians Kerwin Noemdo and Mpumelelo Mhlongo (pictured with Paul Daniels) were among the highlight acts in the men, while Paralympic gold medallist Simone Kruger was again a standout in the women’s competition. Both Mhlongo and Kruger won gold medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
Three new South African records were set, all subject to SASAPD ratification: Johannes Vosloo (U20 F37 shot put), Mihle Nzulwane (U17 F43 shot put) and Valentino English (U17 F57 javelin seated). A further four marks bettered record slots for which SASAPD lists the qualifying standard but no named holder. These are the best marks on record in their events and will be submitted for ratification as the first records.
In total, 75 SA qualification standards were achieved by 44 athletes.
Thirty of the 52 athletes who contested the same event in the same age group at the 2025 trials improved on their mark.
