Parsons holds her own

International and local stars all shone on Saturday’s second day of the Bumbo Gymnastics Cup with an amazing array of gymnastics displayed by the local and international gymnasts.

Katelyn Ohashi (USA) claimed the overall title of the Junior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Champion. Ohashi who was second All-Around at the USA Junior National Championships and is coached by Valeri Liukin had a great competition overall, particularly on beam where her daring feats earned her the top spot in that category with 15.250 points; 1.7 points clear of team mate McKenzie Wofford who claimed 2nd place overall while Keira Brennan (WAL) came third.

Great Britain’s Cameron MacKenzie, who was born in Humansdorp, South Africa clinched the overall title of Junior Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Champion with 82.60 points. Hungarian, Adam Babos came second while Daniel Radeanu (ROM) came third.

The battle in the Senior Men’s competition lived up to expectation turning out to be a close battle between the strong gymnastics nations. Vitaliy Nakonechnyy (UKR) overcame stiff competition to become the SA Bumbo Gymnastics Cup all-around Men’s Artistic Champion with 86.55points. World Champion on vault and floor, Marian Dragulescu (84.90 points) came second despite a solid routine on floor. Commonwealth Games medal winner Luke Folwell came in a close third with 84.75 points.

2010 South African National Champion Chanel Parsons struck again as she became the 2010 Senior All-around Champion. Parsons was able to score consistently high on all apparatus, edging of Commonwealth Games competitor Ashleigh Heldsinger who was runner-up. Star gymnast Jennifer Khwela came 3rd following an unfortunate crash on uneven bars which put her out of contention for the All Around position.

Competition continues later on Saturday which is scheduled to begin at 4pm with the apparatus finals. Highlights look to beOhashi’s sterling beam routine, Marian Dragulescu’s daring routines and Jennifer Khwela’s strongest apparatus, the vault. Entrance is free to the public at the Matsport Centre in Eldoraigne, Centurion.
