Du Plessis seals series

Brand Du Plessis won only his second Momentum Health I-Flex Duathlon Series race in Potchefstroom on Sunday but his consistency saw him comfortably take the overall title.

Du Plessis had been unbeatable in 2009, but a bout of flu saw him lose valuable training time and he didn’t have that same aura of invincibility in 2010 that he enjoyed a year ago.

In the first race he was beaten by triathlete Erhard Wolfaardt at Roodeplaat Dam. The second race on 18 April at Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Cape Town, Du Plessis only managed fourth overall. At Northern Farm on 9 May it appeared he was back to his old self with a comfortable win to take his first full complement of points of the series. Then in Port Elizabeth on 1 August he was pipped on the line by former 1500-metre athlete Johan Pretorius whilst in Giba Gorge, two weeks later, it was Xterra proponent Lieuwe Boonstra, who had the edge.

Sunday’s final event saw Du Plessis back on top of the podium ahead of Sander Berk and with that win he was also crowned Series Champion. Du Plessis’ overall title though was never really in jeopardy as he was the only athlete to compete in all six events and the consistency saw him bag a total of 118 points out of a possible 124. His nearest rival, Lieuwe Boonstra came in at 77, whilst Stuart Marais was third overall with a tally of 53 points.

Nadia Pretorius may not have won a single race, but her consistent high finishing and the fact that she competed in all six events saw her take the overall title with 103 points. Next was Carla Van Huysteen (former Germishuys) with 78 points and Andrea Styen, who competed in only three races, took third overall.

Steyn was unbeatable in 2009, but injuries in 2010 and international commitments saw her miss a number of races.
