Proteas held to draw

The Investec South Africa women’s hockey team were held to a draw by Azerbaijan in their fourth hockey Test, at Randburg on Sunday evening.

This after the South Africans had won the first three Tests in the five-match series. The half-time score was 0-0 between the 12th ranked local side and their 14th ranked visitors.

Azerbaijani striker Aliyeva Mi Seon netted a field goal and Kathleen Taylor equalised three minutes from time with a superb effort after brilliant build-up work by South Africa captain and World All Stars midfielder Marsha Marescia.

SA are now 3-1 ahead in the series with the final Test scheduled for the same venue at 7pm on Monday.

Azerbaijan hit back with some force after SA had dominated the first 10 minutes, Pietie Coetzee and a host of other South Africans all having come close to finding the back of the box. But Investec Player of the Match Mariette Rix, playing her 100th Test, was in top form in the home side’s goal.

Illse Davids, Nicolene Terblanche, Celia Evans, Kim Hubach, Lisa Deetlefs and Lesle-Ann George also defended superbly while the crowd were left wondering what might have happened had Pietie Coetzee, looking for her 205th goal in her 210th Test, or Kim Hubach scored.

The second half was all South Africa’s and Sulette Damons, Hubach, Tarryn Bright and Taylor all came close before the latter’s match-saving effort three minutes from the final whistle.
