Win for SA champ

South African 1500m champion Johan Cronje had an easy victory at the 2009 Weltklasse meeting near Kassel, Germany this weekend, running a tactical 3 min 42.71 sec.

However this means that Cronje still has to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin later this year.

Kenyan junior, William Biwott, who won their encounter in Rehlingen on Monday, was second on this occasion in 3 min 43.17 sec. SA runners, Tshamano Setone (8th) and Pharson Magagane (13th) clocked 3:45.76 and 3:50.83 respectively.

Shaun Bownes, SA record holder in the 110m hurdles, did well to finish fifth in 13.72 sec after a time of 13.84 sec earlier in the evening.

In Norway and France respectively Estie Wittstock and Warren Hendricks both had wins in windy conditions on Saturday. Wittstock, running her third race of the week, won the 400 metres in 53.16 sec from athletes from Hungary, Norway and Denmark.

Hendricks, 21,who represented South Africa as a junior and finished fifth at the 2009 SA Senior Championships, won the 800 metres at a meeting in France in 1 min 50.26 sec.

Gerbrandt Grobler (javelin), who spends most of his time in Scandinavia, finished 5th with a fine 79.48m at a meeting in Seinajoki, Finland. It was his best since 2007. Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway) won the event with 88.97 metres.
