SA Champs to field national superstars

Wayde van Niekerk, Akani Simbine, and Ruswahl Samaai will be some of the high-profile names featured at the South African senior track and field championships starting on Thursday.

The national championships, held in Potchefstroom, will take place between 30 March and 1 April, earmarking the start of South Africa’s athletics season.

Returning to the 400m event at the national championships for the first time since 2016, South African track legend Van Niekerk will go up against two promising youngsters in Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay. The event is a stepping stone for Van Niekerk’s season, with an opportunity to reclaim his world title in Budapest later this year on the horizon.

On the hunt to bag a fifth national title, two-time Olympic finalist Simbine will be the speedster to beat in the 100m event, while Ruswahl Samaai, former world long jump bronze medallist, will be eyeing a fourth national title following a disappointing 2022 campaign.
