South Africa head into Sunday’s reverse singles and doubles match of their World Group II Playofs tie against Nigeria with the score delicately balanced at 1-1 at the Groenkloof Tennis Cup on Pretoria.
The hosts were expected to comfortably sweep aside their African opponents and were on track to doing so when Philip Henning cruised to a 6-1 6-1 win over David Ekpenyong. However, Christopher Bulus recorded one of his biggest career wins when he battled from a set down to upset Kris van Wyk 3-6 6-3 7-6.
Van Wyk is ranked No358 in the world and Bulus No 1015.
Sunday’s matches see Alec Beckley and Leo Matthysen paid up in the men’s doubles, before Henning takes on Bulus and Van Wyk meets Ekpenyong. The South Africans are still heavy favourites to go on to win the tie.
