South Africa’s men have won through to the semi-final stage of the HSBC World SVNS Series leg in Cape Town where they will play season surprises Spain for a place in Sunday’s final.
The Paris 2024 bronze medallists beat Argentina 29-5 to reach the last four, while Fiji and Olympic champions France will face off in a repeat of last weekend’s Dubai final in their semi.
Considering Argentina had won four of the last five meetings between the two sides, this was always a tricky contest for Philip Snyman’s side.
But from the outset, as with their initial 36-7 win over Ireland, the South Africans were switched on from the first whistle. The try of the night came late in the first half when Dewald Human toyed with the Argentina defence, first sprinting then slowing down while being monitored before picking the perfect moment to pin his ears back and beat his man on the outside to score in the corner. South Africa led 17-0 at the half-time break.
Spain repeated their Dubai form with wins over Kenya and Australia to make the semi-finals.
France were also in good form, beating the USA 50-12, and then seeing off a below-par New Zealand 47-15. Fiji beat Uruguay 70-7 and Great Britain 17-12 to book their spot.
