Roland out but Ferns in

Roland Schoeman was the big casualty on day four of the FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome when he failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the blue riband men’s 100m freestyle.┬á

The three-time Olympic medallist from 2000 faded in the final 50m and clocked a moderate 48.69sec, which placed him in 23rd position on the overall list of qualifiers from the heats, and outside the top 16 that progressed to the semi-finals.

However, Lyndon Ferns kept the flag flying by clocking 47.79sec, to be placed third overall after the morning’s events. The fastest qualifier was the American David Walters (47.59).

Ferns broke the South African record in the process, bettering the 48.00 he set at last year’s Olympic Games.

Darian Townsend ensured his place in the semi-finals of the 200m individual medley with 1:58.96 ÔÇô the 13th fastest of the morning heats. Riaan Schoeman failed to progress to the evening session, clocking 2:01.31 to end 30th overall.

Kathryn Meaklim finished 28th in the 200m butterfly heats in 2:11.75.
