SA sides make finals

South Africa quickly got back on track at the African Olympic Junior Hockey Qualifier in East London on Thursday with both boys and girls sides qualifying for Saturday’s final.

The good news came after Wednesday’s setbacks which saw the boys losing and the girls drawing, the first time either side dropped points in the tournament.

Friday is a rest day and Saturday sees the girls coming up against Namibia in the tournament final and the boys will take on Ghana in the second final of the day.

In their final group match on Thursday South Africa accounted for Kenya 3-0 as Ghana beat Egypt 4-1. Three teams ended level on 12 points but Ghana and South Africa went through on better goal difference.

Prolific goalscorer Grant Glutz again got on the scoresheet through a penalty goal and he was joined by Ross Gonsalves and Chad Cairncross who added field goals.

In the women’s final South Africa will play Namibia. This after they slammed seven past a hapless Zimbabwe with no reply coming from the neighbouring nation.

Stephanie Baxter and Jacinta Jubb continued their goalscoring form with two apiece (Baxter’s brace came via two field goals and Jubb scored a field goal and penalty corner. The other three goals came from Tiffany Jones, Adrienne Le Vatte and Sarah Ive.

Ghana ghosted past Kenya with a comfortable 4-0 win.
