South Africa cleaned up at the Southern Region Cross Country Championships in Mauritius, by winning all four individual races as well as the four team competitions. The Championships were the equivalent of a final selection trial for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan, on March 28.
The main event of the day fell to Boy Soke, who crossed the line in the men’s 12km race in 35min 52sec, finishing ahead of countrymen Stephen Mokoka (36:04), Tshamano Setone (36:22), Sibusiso Nzima (36:26) and Jeffrey Gwebu (36:32).
The women’s 8km seniors race produced a tight finish with South Africa’s Lebogang Phalula (27:50) shading teammate Annerien van Schalkwyk (27:55) with Tebogo Masehla third in 28:20.
Elsewhere, Sithyilo Diko (25:05) picked up the 8km junior men’s race with fellow South African Mfumaneko Fadane second in 25:09. In the 6km junior women’s race Ashleigh Schnetler won in 22:14 with Letitia Saayman second in 22:20.
