South African players kept up their good form in international badminton competitions when they won their opening fixture against Bulgaria 4-1 at the Sudirman Cup Tournament (World Team Championships) in Qindao, China.
After retaining their continental champions title in Morocco, the South African team travelled to China to compete in this tournament. The team performed well in the opening round by beating Bulgeria 4-1, loosing only the men’s singles.
South Africa lost the opening game in the men’s singles when Jacob Maliekal lost against Yankov 12-21 16-21. Kerry-Lee Harrington then won against Popstoykova in a thrilling 3-setter 21-18 19-21 21-19 in the women’s singles.
Next up was the men’s doubles and the South Africans took the lead when Dorian James and Willem Viljoen beat Yankov and Boychinov 22-20 and 21-18.┬á Women’s doubles pair Michelle Edwards and Anna Viljoen assured an South African victory (just like they did against the Nigerians two weeks ago) by beating Popstoykova and Maneva 10-21 21-15 21-18.
With the tie already won, Enrico James and Stacy Doubell won the mixed doubles 21-16 21-15.
