SA Women's Hockey5s top pool after Ukraine rout

The South African Women’s Hockey5s team thrashed Ukraine on Thursday morning to top Pool B at the FIH Hockey5s World Cup.

South Africa surged into a commanding 4-0 lead at half time courtesy of a double from Toni Marks and goals from Dirkie Chamberlain and Teshawn de la Ray.

Chamberlain made it a brace of goals early in the second half to make it 5-0 before Ukraine pulled two goals back, but it wasn’t long before South Africa restored their four-goal lead when Chamberlain scored her third to seal the match 6-2.

The squad has now joined the ranks of three other South African teams in reaching the quarter finals of an FIH World Cup, mirroring the accomplishments of the SA Junior Women’s team in 2022 in Potchefstroom, and both the men’s and women’s indoor teams at the 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Pretoria.

This advancement gives the team a chance to outdo the SPAR South Africa indoor hockey team’s performance at the indoor world cup, where they finished in fourth place after a semi-final defeat.

South Africa is set to face Malaysia in the quarters following Malaysia’s 4-4 draw against Fiji, which resulted in Fiji’s elimination on goal difference. The upcoming game will be exclusively available for streaming on Watch.Hockey and is scheduled for 08:20 SAT on Friday.
