Caster Semenya won the 800m silver medal on the final day of the IAAF World Championships in Daegu after an excitingly quick race, where all eight athletes dipped under two minutes.
Semenya, the defending champion, had come from the middle of the field to hit the front at the top of the home straight but untimately couldn’t handle the explosive finish of Russia’s Mariya Savinova, who won gold in 1min 55.87sec. The time was the quickest in the world for the year and Semenya’s 1:56.35 was her fastest of 2011 as well.
Kenya’s Janeth Jepkosgei, who had led the runners through the bell in a fast 55.50, secured bronze in 1:57.42. Five of the eight finalists produced personal bests for the season.
