Team SA’s two wheelchair representatives reached the semi-finals of the men’s singles with comfortable straight sets victories at the African Para Games in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday.
Alwande Sikhosana, the top see
d in the competition, saw off Terlumun Ukari of Nigeria 6-0 6-3, while Leon Els, the No4 seed, battle bravely through the pain to beat another Nigerian, Alex Adewale 6-4 6-0.
Sikhosana had not dropped a game in three sets before he allowed Ukari onto the scoresheet, and the South African looked in imperious touch in reaching the semis, where he will play the winner of Said Himam, the No3 seed from Morocco, and Ghana’s Bernard Yawson.
Els, the veteran of the two Team SA representatives at the age of 35, will meet the winner of the No2 seed Lhaj Bouckartacha, of Morocco, and Mali’s Abou Konate in the semi-final.
The two South Africans then paired up for the men’s doubles and secured a 6-1 6-3 victory against the Nigerian doubles act of Adelwale and Ukari.
