Sixth spot for Skizo

Beijing Olympian BMX rider Sifiso Nhlapo ended sixth in the UCI Silver Dollar National competition in Reno, Nevada at the weekend.

Marc Willers was the overall winner of the weekend’s racing but Nhlapo, known in BMX circles as Skizo, reckons he is happy with the way his year has started.

“The weekend started off very well with a deep field of elite men. With this kind of field I was excited to see where my level is at the beginning of a new season when the old season ended just six weeks ago. A lot of guys on the come back from injury like Donny Robinson and Mike Day.

“The track was fast and had a lot of flow with a tight first turn. I felt good throughout practice and my qualifiers on day one and transferred through my quarters and semi.”

In the helter-skelter, frenetic world of BMX racing the sheer nature of the sport lives virtually no margin for error as he found out in Saturday’s main event. All the big names were there with Skizo –the likes of Marc [Williers], Corben Sharrah, Donny Robinson, Denzel Stein, Cristian Becerine and Jason Rogers.

“I came out the gate a little late and got shut down on the first jump leaving me minimum room to make a move. I ended up with a sixth place which I wasn’t to happy with. Day two was a traditional early morning 7:30am warm-up which I was prepared for. Motos went well and I transferred into the quarters easy. Unfortunately that’s where it ended for mer with a 5th in quarters and not transferring into the semi or main event.”

Still, Nhlapo is happy with his form for the moment. “Overall I felt good and know what I need to work on for the next race in Guthrie, Oklahoma in two weeks which is also for UCI points. The main focus for this weekend was to get some UCI points and get in some consistent laps. I’m looking forward to the two weeks of training so I can regroup and put the missing pieces of the puzzle together. The new bike has been great and caused a lot of interest at the first race.”
